Important Notification Regarding Employees on Curricular Practical Training
Please be aware that the Student & Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) sent new guidance this week to universities regarding work authorization based on Curricular Practical Training (CPT). Specifically, SEVP reminded universities that CPT is only allowed where the training is an integral part of the established curriculum and all students enrolled in that established curriculum must participate in it and complete the practical training. SEVP warned that failure to comply with the new SEVP regulations may result in an institution losing certification to enroll foreign students. We have received reports that some universities are temporarily pausing/suspending CPT applications, which may leave employees with only a very short remaining period of CPT work authorization. Employers may want to identify all CPT employees to understand who may lose work authorization and if any other visa options might be available.
