Ian Joyce is a government relations attorney in Snell & Wilmer’s Special Litigation and Compliance Practice Group. His focus is in adversarial proceedings involving government entities, including municipal and county level litigation, false claims act litigation, open records and meeting act issues, zoning and land use matters, mining rights, data privacy, and constitutional disputes, among many other things. He also defends licensed professionals and corporations in connection with investigations initiated by government agencies or state licensing boards. This practice involves high-profile and fast-paced matters, often requiring emergency over-the-weekend work, extraordinarily expedited briefing schedules, and rapid appeals.
Ian is also experienced in defamation and First Amendment law, having represented public and private figures in a wide array of cases involving reputational damage and other speech issues. In this role, he has developed an online defamation practice, which focuses on working collaboratively with social media and other websites to remove defamatory comments without resorting to full scale litigation. He has also written extensively on defamation issues in Arizona and throughout the Country.
In addition to these matters, Ian also handles conventional commercial disputes, including insurance bad faith, breach of contract, noncompetition issues, and indemnification/reimbursement.
Ian has been recognized by the Best Lawyers in America® as “One to Watch” for Government Relations Practice (2026) and Corporate Governance and Compliance Law (2024-2026). He currently serves on the board of directors for Nourish Phoenix (PHX), a food bank and clothing shelter in downtown Phoenix, and on the Young Professionals Board for UMOM New Day Centers, a homeless shelter also located in downtown PHX. While at Vanderbilt University Law School, Ian was awarded the Branstetter Summer Fellowship and worked in the Stanton Foundation First Amendment Clinic.
He spends his spare time with Yogi (his beloved corgi), making homemade pizza, playing golf, and reading historical nonfiction.
