Global Connection – March 2021
Dear Friend of Snell & Wilmer:
This is the first issue of our Global Connection newsletter since President Biden took office. Global trade may not dominate the news in the early days of his presidency, but it does directly impact many of the challenges faced by the United States.
It is still too early to have a clear view of President Biden’s trade policy. For example, we still do not have a clear direction on his stance on trade negotiations with China. Nonetheless, many of President Biden's early executive orders, policies and plans tend to indicate that he seeks to create a trade environment that will incentivize companies to build up their North American supply chains and invest in expanding production capacity in the United States.
It is in this current trade environment that we bring five new articles to you:
- Patricia Brum discusses the impact of President Biden’s Buy American Executive Order on purchases of foreign-made products and construction materials;
- Carlos Freaner and Jorge Fragoso discuss the outsourcing reform bill introduced by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, which if approved will impact both outsourcing and insourcing of jobs practically across all industries in Mexico;
- Ian Joyce discusses the impact of the Anti-Corruption Chapter in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement;
- James Melendres and Mary Colleen Fowler discuss the developments in cross-border data flows following recent a decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union; and
- Tracy Olson discusses proposed new federal legislation aimed at stifling foreign influence in U.S. elections.
We hope that you enjoy the articles and that they prove useful in your business dealings. If you have any suggestions for future editions of Global Connection or would like to be included in future international events hosted by the firm, please feel free to contact us.
Best,
Brett W. Johnson and Patricia Brum
