PHOENIX – Snell & Wilmer is pleased to announce that Sara Van Houten has been appointed to serve on the Board of Directors of the Central and Northern Arizona Chapter of The American Red Cross.

The mission of The American Red Cross is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Each Chapter is governed by its own Board of Directors, composed of representatives from several different community sectors. Each Regional Board of Directors is tasked with ensuring that their Chapter effectively stewards donor contributions and successfully delivers the Red Cross mission within their community.

“I have tremendous respect and appreciation for the work and services provided by The American Red Cross. I am honored to be appointed for this amazing opportunity and am excited to get to work,” said Van Houten.

Van Houten is an active member of her community, having previously served on the Board of Directors of Crisis Nursery (now Child Crisis Arizona) for numerous years and also volunteering at Child Crisis Arizona and Homeless Legal Assistance.

In her legal practice, Van Houten counsels employers regarding all aspects of the design, operation and compliance of their employee benefit and executive compensation plans. She advises clients on compliance with the Internal Revenue Code, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA), the Affordable Care Act, COBRA, and HIPAA. Van Houten works with public and private companies to design and draft incentive compensation programs, omnibus equity plans, severance plans and change in control arrangements. She assists clients with qualified retirement plans and her experience includes plan design and administration, drafting plan documents, SPDs and plan amendments, plan corrections, service provider and investment management agreement reviews, and preparing IRS and DOL submissions. She also helps clients with ERISA fiduciary issues and employee benefits planning in mergers and acquisitions.
