California Supreme Court Stops Newhall Ranch Project on Climate Change Concerns

In a split decision, the California Supreme Court has reversed a lower court’s approval of the Newhall Ranch Mega-Project’s 5,828 page environmental impact report, stating the lower court failed to adequately support its conclusion that the development would not significantly affect the levels of greenhouse gas emissions, and thereby not contribute to climate change. ENR reports that, in writing for the 5 justice majority, Justice Kathryn Mickle Werdegar stated the lack of evidence supporting the EIR’s conclusions “decision makers and the public are left with only an unsubstantiated assertion that the impacts – here, the cumulative impact of the project on global warming – will not be significant.” Read the full ENR article here.
