Tim Toohey is a U.S. Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP). His practice is concentrated on complex litigation, intellectual property and privacy and data protection matters. He has extensive experience in all elements of intellectual property counseling and litigation, including trademark, copyright and patent matters. Tim’s experience includes the trial and arbitration of trademark, design patent and copyright infringement matters, as well as licensing and trade secret disputes. He has also been involved in numerous matters involving privacy and data protection, including matters involving federal, state and international laws involving data breach and disclosure of personally identifiable information.
Tim has handled a variety of privacy and data breach matters, including advice regarding the CAN-SPAM Act, Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Electronic Communications Privacy Act, cloud computing and social media. He has also advised clients regarding California’s Song-Beverly Act, the California Security Breach Notice provisions and international privacy and security issues, including compliance with European Union (E.U.) data protection and privacy directives. In addition, Tim regularly represents clients in environmental and other cases.
Tim has particular knowledge in brand protection matters, including trade dress, trademark and design patent work. He has been involved in several high profile anti-counterfeiting and infringement cases, particularly for consumer products. Experienced in complex litigation matters, Tim has litigated securities, corporate governance, entertainment industry, unfair competition, right of publicity and other matters in California state and federal courts.
Tim has lectured in the UCLA Department of History, where he teaches courses in United States Constitutional and Legal History.
